Jain food comes from ahimsa— non-violence toward all living beings. It isn't a wellness trend or a stricter flavor of vegetarianism; it's a diet built around causing the least possible harm to every form of life, including the ones too small to see.

That starts with the obvious: no meat, no fish, no eggs — nothing that requires killing an animal. But ahimsa doesn't stop at animals. Pulling a root vegetable — onion, garlic, potato, carrot, ginger — out of the ground kills the entire plant, not just the part you eat, and destroys the countless micro-organisms living in the soil around its roots. Honey is avoided for the same reason. None of it is about any one ingredient being "impure" — it's the same principle, minimizing violence, applied consistently all the way down.

That's also why "vegetarian" isn't the same as Jain. A dish can be completely vegetarian and still be off-limits because of an onion or a potato. JainEats tracks a real Jain-ness signal for every place — from fully-Jain kitchens to spots that will happily customize if you ask.

Every place carries dish-level notes — what to order, what to ask them to change, and what to avoid. Crowd-sourced notes are structured into that shape with the help of an LLM, then reviewed. Because Jain suitability changes (chefs and owners change), each place shows when it was last updated.

Data comes from trusted contributors and community lists, and flows through a review queue before publishing. Over time, "last confirmed Jain" signals help you judge how fresh a listing is. Spotted something wrong or out of date? Add or correct it.

Much of the initial directory came from two public Google Maps lists — Jain Food in USA and Jain Dessert in USA. Thank you for building and sharing them with the community.

Cuisine tags are also enriched using Overture Maps Foundation place data, licensed CDLA-Permissive 2.0 and Apache 2.0.
